OLD CEMETERY – MEMORIAL PARK

Members of Assembly of City Municipality of Palilula, on nineteen meeting which is held in the hall of Cultural Centre of Nis, passed unanimously decision about starting up initiative that space of Old cemetery “Gorica” turn in memorial park. On this meeting, chaired by Milan Djurdjevic, president of Assembly, it is given positive opinion on the Plan of detailed regulation of the street “Djordja Ljubinkovica” in the settlement Delijksi Vis and opinion on the amendment PDR of settlement “9 Maj” for the street “Dobrodolska”. Vesna Jovanovic – Jankovic, secretary of the Assembly of City Municipality of Palilula in the explanation of initiative to transmute Old cemetery in Memorial park highlighted that this action must make in the way that will memory on citizens who on this place rest must be kept. This would be – by the words of secretary of Assembly, conversation of the monuments,  who are under the protection of the Institute for Cultural Heritage Preservation, by the project of PE Institute of Urban Planning in Nis, will be properly regulated. Initiative was created keeping in mind that the funeral in the Old cemetery do not perform more then 40 years, what is sufficient period of time that such of project starts. Unfortunately, survivors are generally not concerned with the maintenance of burial sites of their ancestors, encouraging passers-by and inappropriate gathering on this place, create a landfill and growing weeds that are difficult to remove because for this purpose there are not funds approved. With organization and constant care of Old cemetery, citizens of this part of the city will get green surface worth of attention.

Thanks to the projects and actions which City Municipality of Palilula realizing from year 2008th  in cooperation with Public utilities and NGOs this space is maintaining seasonal for now. “Old Nis cemetery” extends on area of 8 hectares, from this area more then 3,4 hectares is abandoned area. “At this period it was done more then few last decades – said Prof. Dr. Igor Novakovic, president of  City municipality of Palilula. Unfortunately, unscrupulous citizens continue to destroy the vaults and disposal waste and vegetation also very fast covers vaults – landscaped area so activities of planning every year is back on beginning. Fencing “Old cemetery”, setting lightning and introducing guard service or video surveillance and routine maintenance of green areas, by the project that we made in cooperation with Institute for Cultural Heritage Preservation, highlights president Novakovic, will keep the rest of the memorial from destroying and it will be realized idea of establishment of memorial park on the pride of all Nis citizens. It is expected until 2012 that whole complex of “Old cemetery” under Gorica, with support of the City and donors, according to Novakovic, get an entirely new look.
